Finally, a great bike ride.
What a difference a day makes. I went into the ride today with less than enthusisam for the new bike. All my rides so far with the new bike were along Bee Caves Road which is mostly hills. I did not feel comfortabel on the bike and it just did not seem to fit me. Well, today I have to say, I feel otherwise. We made a long ride out from Austin towards Kyle. The first part of the ride I was by myself. I could not keep up with the lead group. I was cool with that. I figured it would be a good oppurtunity for me to get confortable on the bike, ride at my own pace and enjoy the day. The pace was feeling really good. I am not sure how fast I was going but I was cranking out the mile pretty fast. The hills were tough but I felt good on them. I set my watch for 15 minute intervals to remind me to eat and drink. I was having fun. I made it to Kyle and caught up with the lead group who were taking a break. I had enough time to get water, eat something and then join them as they headed back to Austin. Then the fun started. We had a paceline of about 6-9 people. We were turning about 20 miles an hour as we rode back to town. It was really fun to be going that fast and not dying from the effort. Heart rate was around 134 on average. Riding at that speed and sitting 10 inches off the rear wheel of the guy in front of you takes intense concentration. I think that is what made it so fun. It was like a video game. Total focus. Total distance was 72 miles at an average speed of 18.3 MPH. Gotta love that..
